TOOTH CLUTCHES With electric, pnuematic, and mechanical actuation for ordinary and torque limiting applications. |
The OVER-RUNNING CLUTCH MODULE at the upper left can be combined with
other devices in the user’s drive. It’s low cost along with savings in
components and machining results in the most compact and cost effective
arrangement possible.
Stock bores are 5/8, 3/4, 7/8 & 1”.
The MODULE WITH BEARING HUB
at the lower left is dimensionally interchangeable with other
clutches of this type. Components such as gears, sprockets, belts, cams
etc are mounted on the hub and the entire package is supported
through the hub’s plain bearing by the shaft.
The MODULE in the center is supplied with a TANDEM MOUNTED SPROCKET
and at the upper right is the MODULE with our COUPLING HUB for in line
shafts. The clutch at the lower right has a slot in its FACE PLATE
which can engage a fixed pin for use as a backstop or to input motion from
a reciprocating source thus functioning as a ratchet or actuator.
| APPLICATION DATA
The set screw binds the key and cam to the shaft thus positioning the clutch on the shaft. It is accessible thru the oil hole screw. Use grease for low speed or mineral oil for high speeds. A body of grease about the size of the roller placed on the ramp by each roller or about 3 cc of mineral oil are good starting points. The clutches leave the factory with grease arranged for shaft driving ccw unless otherwise specified. The allowable radial load on the hub is given by the graph at the right
as a function of hub speed relative to the shaft during over-running.

Two configurations are shown, the Bearing Mount, Type B, used when both
halves of the
clutch are mounted on the same shaft, and the Coupling, type C, used
as a clutch coupling.
The tooth angle, Figure 1, determines the axial force on the sliding
jaw. The tooth angle for
zero engagement force is called the neutral angle and it’s value depends
on the radii to the teeth and key, finishes, material and lubrication.
If the angle is greater than neutral, about
20 degrees in most cases, there is a disengaging force which must be
overcome if the clutch is to stay engaged. For smaller angles, force must
be applied to disengage the clutch. Either way, the forces can be substantial
and must be delivered thru the sleeve.
The “ Torque Limiting “ tooth has a large enough angle to assure a disengaging force essentially proportional to the torque load thus providing an overload releasing capability thru control of the axial force.
The straight tooth is good when the clutch can be disengaged at rest or unloaded so little concern for sleeve load is required by the designer.
A variety of tooth forms can be provided a few of which are shown below. The symmetrical form is inexpensive and the most versatile. At higher relative speeds of engagement the saw tooth will allow the teeth to enter farther during the shift time but has different tooth angles in each rotation direction. In the case of unidirectional drive this may be of no consequence. The interrupted tooth allows for either a symmetrical form as shown or can be a sawtooth and will allow time for a full depth engagement prior to pickup. If the speed of engagement is low the idle time till pickup is greater.
TRIP PIN TYPE SINGLE REVOLUTION CLUTCH
OPERATION: The housing rotates continuously, the shaft being engaged
by withdrawing the pawl radially. The clutch then remains engaged until
the pawl stops the pin. Thus a whole number of shaft revolutions can be
accomplished. Fractional revolutions are possible also by providing more
than one pin on the cage.
SINGLE REVOLUTION DRIVE
OPERATION: The output shaft will always engage at the same place, the duration of the electrical pulse determines the number of revolutions. Input and output shafts or input hub bore is per customer specs up to 1” max dia. Voltage and mounting details are also open.

This 1 inch dia shaft drives a 12
inch dia disc attached with bolts at it's end. The disc has cuttersat it's
rim which are shock loaded. Previous shafts had short lives due tofatigue
stress at the intersection of the bolt flange with the body of the shaft.
A one piece
construction using a free machining pre-heat treated steel
along withclose control of both finish and dimension of the radius at the
intersection was the solution.
Provides high torque in a small diameter. The bore is 5/8 dia. and the broached ring is 3 inch dia. The friction discs are bronze on steel 1/16 thick. A threaded pressure plate with spring pockets is adjusted axially to vary the torque.
It is hardened and ground to R/C 60 on the large diameters and R/C 35 at it's core. Note the small neck and the resulting difficulty to achieve straightness through the heat treat process. The holes in the main groove required careful angular location so as to neatly intersect their counterparts.
This coupling had a broached "D" slot hole. We produce our own broaches in house and can hold low quantity broaching to very low cost.
The photo is a prototype with a split clamp design to defeat backlash. We made it practically free of charge as a service to the customer, who opted for the solid construction already in production.
TOOTH CLUTCH TYPE OVERLOAD RELEASE
This simple overload release has "Torque Limiting" type teeth cut in the hub of the sprocket. When it overloads the spring loaded pressure plate ,which carries a switch tripping pin, moves axially enough to strike the switch.
STAINLESS STEEL FAST ACTING SPLIT SHAFT COLLAR
This was required in a production plating process. All parts are corrosion resistant. The screws were metric standard.
but making it in low quantities and at just the right price is not so easy.
That is our SERVICE !!

THE PROMISE
Our system, equipment, staff and methods are all chosen so that whether the work is simple or complex, small or large, one of a kind or mass produced, you get
QUALITY, ECONOMY, DELIVERY & SERVICE
QUALITY AND ECONOMY oppose one another but they are achievable simultaneously through organization and planning. We go over every job, even the simple ones, and reach a written plan that co-ordinates our work and states both quality and time objectives. We engineer the production job; write processing, design special tools, specify standard tools, spell out the operator's inspection frequency and methods, set production standards and compare performance with them. The quality is assured through first part and in process patrol inspection by an inspector reporting to the sales manager. Prior to shipment the product must pass a final inspection.
DELIVERY
AND SERVICE require effort and willingness to adjust schedules. We're in
business to earn a profit by satisfying your needs and when you need overtime
or a schedule change, you will get it. And we're well located to give good
delivery and service being within 10 minutes of all our major suppliers
and downtown Dayton. See * on map. In an hour's circuit our driver can
reach the shipping rooms of industrial suppliers whose combined inventories
are in the millions of dollars. In an equally brief period he can visit
specialty sub-contractors of every important toolmaking and manufacturing
process.
